In 1928 Robert Aaron received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Johns Hopkins University. In 1931 he obtained a Master of Arts degree from Harvard University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1934.
Robert Aaron Gordon wrote extensively on industrial organisation and the theory of business cycles in the postwar period. From 1931 to 1938 he was an instructor at Harvard University. From 1938 to 1940 he served as an assistant professor at the University of California Berkeley, an associate professor from 1940 to 1947, a professor from 1947 to 1976 and a professor emeritus from 1976 to 1978.
