Mathis was born on May 7, 1960 in Meridian, Mississippi, United States; the daughter of Dannie Kaye Broadhead and Shirley Nadine (Green) Broadhead.
Mathis received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1982. Four years later she earned her Master of Science degree from the same university. Also in 1989, Sharon was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana.
Mathis began her career as a a teaching assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1983. Two years later she took a position of a biologist at the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The same year Sharon became a teaching assistant at the University of Southwestern Louisiana.
She was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Saskatchewan from 1990 to 1993. In 1993, Mathis held a position of an assistant professor at Missouri State University. Since 1998 she served as an associate professor at the same university. Nowadays Sharon is a professor at Missouri State University.
Mathis is a member of Animal Behavior Society, International Society for Behavioral Ecology, American Society of Icthyologists and Herpetologists, Society for the Study of Evolution and Society for Study Amphibians & Reptiles.
