Career

Midshipman C.S.N., 1861-1862. Private Company B, 2d Virginia Cavalry, Fitz Lee’s Brigade, 1862-1865. Thrice wounded. Taught school, 1866-1867.

Practiced law, Craig County, Virginia, 1869-1870, Charles Town, West Virginia, 1870-1878. Appointed to 1st professorship of law in newly established College of Law of West Virginia University, 1878. Retired under Carnegie Foundation, 1909.
