Stephen Jay Gould Edit Profile
Antioch College, Columbia University.
Gould recurrently touches on broader themes in his popular works. These include the portrayal of science as a profoundly human activity pervaded by the differing cultural contexts of its practitioners but united in its rejection of dogma--whether the dogma is biological determinism (the idea that our most fundamental traits have a direct genetic basis), or the "scientific creationism" espoused by some Christian fundamentalists. As an alternative to such dogmas, Gould celebrates human potentiality and argues for the value of diversity, plurality, and tolerance.
