Carlisle was born on December 28, 1932 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States; the daughter of Nathan G. Goodman and Julia (Nusbaum) Goodman.
Carlisle received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1954. Six years later she earned his Master of Arts degree from Boston University.
Carlisle began her career as an assistant and then an associate professor of English at State University of New York in 1965 and held it for seventeen years. In 1978, she became a lecturer at Tufts University. Then in 1981, Susan was appointed a curriculum coordinator of Decision Making Center at the same university, where she worked until 1991. In 1993 she became a co-director of the Center of Teaching and Advising at Tufts University.
Carlisle is a member of American Association of the University of Professors, Environmental Design Research Association, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi.
On August 31, 1954 Susan Carlisle married Robert B. Carlisle. They have three children.
