Tamer Essawi received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology 1973 from Grove City College, USA, and a Master of Science degree in Medical Microbiology 1978 from Leningrad State University, Soviet Union, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Immunology 1981 from institute of Experimental Medicine Academy of Medical Sciences, Soviet Union.
Essawi began his academic career in 1982 as an assistant professor at the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at the Faculty of Science at Birzeit University. He served as a Chair of the department from1997 - 2000. In 2000 he established the Master Program in Clinical Laboratory science at Birzeit University. He served as director of the program from 2000- 2010. In 2004 he established a medical laboratory at Birzeit University Clinic and served as a director of the laboratory from 2004 - 2017 In June 11, 2007 he became a Tenure professor at Birzeit University. In 2008 he established the Faculty of Nursing, Pharmacy and Health Professions at Birzeit University, and served as a Dean of the Faculty from 2008 - 2015.
