Theophilus Hunter Holmes, American army officer. Served as Second lieutenant United States Army on frontier duty in Louisiana, Arkansas and Indian lands, 1830-1836.

Background

Holmes, Theophilus Hunter was born on November 13, 1804 in Sampson County, North Carolina, United States. Son of Governor Gabriel H. and Mary (Hunter) Holmes.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1829.

Career

Served as Second lieutenant United States Army on frontier duty in Louisiana, Arkansas and Indian lands, 1830-1836. Served in Mexican War. In command of recruiting Governor’s Island, New York, 1859-1861.

Commissioned brigadier general Confederate Army, in command of brigade at Aquia Creek, Virginia, June 5, 1861. In command brigade at 1st Battle of Bull Run. Fought in N. Virginia campaign.

Major general in command div. under Magruder’s command in Battle of Seven Days before Richmond. Served as Lieutenant general at Battle of Vicksburg, 1862.
