(This is the biography of a remarkable Irishman who receiv...)
This is the biography of a remarkable Irishman who received his early education in the back streets of Dublin towards the end of the eighteenth century and went on to study for the priesthood in the re-emerging Society of Jesus in England and Sicily. In Sicily, he ministered to the Irish troops and naval personnel who formed part of the British force defending the island against Napoleon. On returning to Ireland he acted as Vice-President of Maynooth College, and, in face of much opposition, including questions in the House of Commons, established the Jesuit College of Clongowes Wood, followed by a residence and church in Dublin, and a residence in the midlands. In conjunction with his friend, Archbishop Murray of Dublin, he also played a key role as guide and spiritual director to a number of religious congregations, especially the Irish Christian Brothers, the Sisters of Charity, and the Sisters of Loreto.

(A man with a strong social conscience and sense of social...)
A man with a strong social conscience and sense of social responsibility, William Martin Murphy has long been viewed as something of an ogre - as the man who starved the workers of Dublin into submission in 1913-14 and called for the execution of James Connolly in 1916. This revised biography re-examines Murphy's remarkable career. Thomas J. Morrissey, SJ, is a former headmaster of Crescent College Comprehensive in Limerick and president of the National College of Industrial Relations Dublin. He has written some thirteen books on Irish Labour, Ecclesiastical, Jesuit, and Educational History.

(O'Dwyer was brilliant intellectually, independent-minded ...)
O'Dwyer was brilliant intellectually, independent-minded and quarrel-some, but a life-long supporter of the poor of Limerick. He played a major role in improving primary education, in helping to solve the University question, and as a leader in workhouse reform. In his final years, he helped to change the course of Irish history. In 1916, when the population was cowed following the execution of the leaders of the Rising, O'Dwyer wrote from Kilmallock his public letter to General Maxwell in defense of two of his priests, Frs Hall and Bayes. In that letter, he denounced Maxwell as a murderer and stirred the whole country to life. His subsequent famous speech at the conferring on him of the Freedom of Limerick gave an episcopal approval to the spirit of national resistance and influenced the East Clare election of 1917. O'Dwyer became a national hero, de Valera quoted his speech at the hustings, and his name was joined to those of the dead 1916 leaders in popular ballads.

(This is an overdue first biography of one of the most inf...)
This is an overdue first biography of one of the most influential figures in Irish Labour in the first half of the 20th century. O'Brien was a delegate to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions for more than 30 years and had the distinction of being four times president of Congress. His name is mainly associated with that of Ireland's then-largest trade union, the ITGWU, which he helped to build after 1916, and of which he was General Secretary for over twenty years,

Edward J. Byrne became Archbishop of Dublin in 1921 and remained in office till his death in 1940. He therefore ruled during the period of some of the critical events and developments in the new Irish Free State from the Civil War, through the change of government in 1932 and right up to the adoption of De Valera's Constitution of 1937. On the ecclesiastical side, his reign covered the two massive celebrations of the time, the centenary celebrations for Catholic Emancipation in 1929 and then the Eucharistic Congress of 1932.

(Laurence O'Neill (1864-1943) was Lord Mayor of Dublin dur...)
Laurence O'Neill (1864-1943) was Lord Mayor of Dublin during key years in modern Irish history, 1917-1924. During these troubled years, he held the confidence of his fellow counselors and was hailed in ballad as the greatest Lord Mayor since Daniel O'Connell. He combined charm with oratorical gifts, political skill, mediation in industrial disputes, and a strong social conscience. In 1916, O'Neill was wrongfully imprisoned, an experience which gave him empathy with political prisoners and enabled him to be a successful negotiator between them and the authorities, especially in cases of hunger strike. As Lord Mayor, he convened and chaired the Mansion House Conference against conscription, helping to unite all shades of nationalist opinion against this proposal. A constitutional nationalist himself, Laurence O'Neill was friendly with de Valera and Michael Collins, the Dail met in the Mansion House and republican leaders secretly found shelter there during the Troubles. At the same time, Lord Mayor O'Neill cultivated the leading authorities so as to promote openness to negotiation, employment, and civic peace. This important biography by Thomas J. Morrissey SJ restores O'Neill to his rightful place as a champion of liberty, justice, and national pride - a patriot who was a man of peace and an outstanding Lord Mayor.
