Four years later he earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of South Florida in 1968. In 1972, Thomas was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Texas.
Piantanida began his career as a counselor at Hillsborough County Juvenile Court in 1965 and held it for two years. In 1970, he took a position of an instructor of genetics at Dominican College, where he worked until 1971. In 1972, Thomas was appointed a research associate at Florida State University. Then in 1975, he became an assistant professor of physiological optics at the University of Alabama School of Optometry. Since 1977 Piantanida was a senior research scientist at SRI International.
Piantanida is a member of the International Research Group on Colour Vision Deficiencies, Association for Research Vision and Ophthalmology, Sports Car America Club in San Francisco and Corsa Club in Albany. He has been a member of SRI International since 1990.
On June 4, 1961 Thomas Piantanida married Barbara Louise Hiltbrunner, with whom he divorced on December 5, 1975. They have two children. On June 6, 1981 he married Patricia Louise Lee.
