Virgil Holcomb Todd received a Bachelor of Arts from Bethel College in 1945. In 1947, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Cumberland Presbyterian Seminary and a Master of Arts from Scarritt College in 1948. In 1956, he received a Doctor of Philosophy from Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Todd was an ordained minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, serving churches in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi. From 1952 to 1954, he was an associate professor at Bethel College in Mckenzie. In 1954, he was appointed a professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Memphis Theological Seminary. He was elected Moderator of the General Assembly of the denomination in 1986. He was named Professor Emeritus of Memphis Theological Seminary in 1987 at the time of his retirement as Professor of Old Testament Studies, a position he held for thirty-three years and two years as an adjunct professor.
Virgil was a member of the Society of Biblical Literature, Memphis Ministers Association and Civitan Lodge.
On September 21, 1941, Todd married Irene Rolman. They had one son, Donald Edwin.
