Walter Husted Stevens, American army officer.


Stevens, Walter Husted was born on August 24, 1827 in Penn Yan, New York, United States. Son of Samuel Stephens.


Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1848.


In Corps Engineers, United States Army, 1848, promoted to First lieutenant, 1855, resigned commission, 1861. Appointed captain engrs. Confederate Army, 1861.

Promoted major at Battle of Bull Run, made chief engineer Army of Northern Virginia, 1862. Colonel in charge of defenses of Richmond (Virginia), circa 1862. Commissioned brigadier general, 1864, also chief engineer Lee’s Army until its surrender, 1865.

Became superintendent, constructing engineer of a railroad between Vera Cruz (Mexico) and Mexico City, 1865, subsequently chief engr.
