Fimian began his career as an assistant professor at Boston College in 1955. Five years later he became an associate professor of biology department at the same college. Since 1993 Walter has been a professor emeritus at Boston College.
Fimian is a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science and Radiation Research Society.
