Koppenol was born on May 11, 1949, in Alkmaar, Netherlands; the son of Willem Koppenol and Aletta Adriana Koppenol-Van Wensveen.
In 1978 Koppenol received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Mathematics and Physical Science from the University of Utrecht in Utrecht, Utrecht, Netherland.
Koppenol began his career as a post-doctoral research associate at Northwestern University in 1978. Three years later he took a position of an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Maryland. Then in 1987, Willem became an associate professor of chemistry at Louisiana State University.
Since 1994 he has been a professor of chemistry at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Koppenol was a visiting professor at the University of Alabama and the University of Republic, Montevideo, Uruguay.
Koppenol is a member of Oxygen Society.
On October 20, 1973, Willem Koppenol married Margaretha Knape. They have three daughters. Margaretha Knape died on May 11, 1984. On January 6, 1986, he married Patricia Lynn Bounds. They have a son.
