Background
BUCKLEY, William was born on November 24, 1925 in New York, United States. Son of William Frank and Aloise (Steiner) Buckley.
(Review By Yaakov (James) Mosher A pack of cigarettes put...)
Review By Yaakov (James) Mosher A pack of cigarettes puts William Buckley super spy Blackford Oakes onto a plot that got a team of American and British commandos killed. Buckley impressively uses spartan prose to spin an international tale of intrigue. The storyline is clever and the chapters short. Retired editor but still owner of National Review magazine and longtime host of the departed "Firing Line" TV program, Buckley's desire to keep the "special relationship" between the U.S. and Britain strong during the Cold War may explain why he chose to use fictitious names for British leaders -- Queen Elizabeth II appears as "Queen Caroline" and Prime Minister Anthony Eden becomes "Anthony Brogan." Yet real-life U.S. and Soviet leaders -- Eisenhower, the Dulles brothers, Khrushchev, KGB chief Beria -- appear as themselves. Agent Oakes, curiously educated at Yale just like one-time CIA man Buckley, has an intimate personal relationship with the queen of the UK. Prince Philip, watch your back. Other high humor in "High Jinx" -- Buckley gives himself a cameo through mention of his supportive work on Sen. Joseph McCarthy. Our author shows he's a man of truth by not trying to bury this part of his life. Buckley's knowledge of world affairs enables him to sneak in what George Kennan observed was one of the most overlooked aspects of the Cold War -- that it was much more about practical politics than ideology. Leaders of the U.S. and USSR didn't expect to conquer the world. They mostly wished to avoid embarrassment. Buckley's name happens to be very close to that of a real-life CIA station chief in Beirut who was kidnapped and murdered during the Reagan years. Never read the author's reaction to this sad coincidence. Would be neat for WFB to use this incident and his considerable powers to give us a Blackford Oakes tale set in the War on Terror. Include characters based upon WFB's accomplished writer/humorist son Christopher and WFB's late wife Pat (died 2007).

(President Truman is near the end of his term in office, a...)
President Truman is near the end of his term in office, and Great Britain has a new queen. It is 1952, the Cold War is heating up, and vital military secrets are falling into Soviet hands. The CIA faces a delicate dilemma--for the source of the leaks has been traced directly to the Queen's chambers. The situation must be resolved but without damaging the young Queen's self-confidence and public credibility. Young Blackford Oakes, the handsome, debonaire, and audacious Yale graduate and ex-fighter pilot, is selected to penetrate the royal circle, win the Queen's confidence, and plug the leak. The action leads to an explosive showdown in the skies over London, one that could determine the future of the West. Buckley presents a thrilling spy novel as he introduces Blackforf Oakes for the first time in Saving the Queen.

(This is the story of one man's faith, told with unrivaled...)
This is the story of one man's faith, told with unrivaled reflection and candor. William F. Buckley, Jr., was raised a Catholic. As the world plunged into war, and as social mores changed dramatically around him, Buckley's faith -- a most essential part of his make-up -- sustained him. In Nearer, My God, Buckley examines in searching detail the meaning of his faith, and how his life has been shaped and sustained by religious conviction.

( "For God, for country, and for Yale... in that order," ...)
"For God, for country, and for Yale... in that order," William F. Buckley Jr. wrote as the dedication of his monumental work—a compendium of knowledge that still resonates within the halls of the Ivy League university that tried to cover up its political and religious bias. Buckley's harsh assessment of his alma mater divulged the reality behind the institution's wholly secular education, even within the religion department and divinity school. Unabashed, one former Yale student details the importance of Christianity and heralds the modern conservative movement in his preeminent tell-all, God and Man at Yale: The Superstitions of "Academic Freedom."

(CIA super-agent Blackford Oakes spies around Berlin, just...)
CIA super-agent Blackford Oakes spies around Berlin, just before the Wall goes up--in the most somber, least witty or inventive of Buckley's Cold War thrillers thus far. "Find out what Khrushchev actually plans to do." That's Blackford's latest mission, as East Germany's Walter Ulbricht keeps pressuring Moscow for help in stopping the population flow from East to West Berlin. So Blackford makes contact with legendary Henri Tod, the young leader of a private anti-Communist spy network in Germany: he's charismatic, daring, a German-Jewish survivor of the Holocaust (who blames himself for the death-camp demise of his beloved sister Clementa). And Tod seems to know more than anyone else about the possibility of East German/Soviet action in Berlin--especially when, after being wounded during a murder-mission to East Berlin, he just happens to wind up in the tender care of Waiter Ulbricht's feckless, charming, rebellious nephew! Soon, then, back in West Berlin, Tod is getting the inside dope on the forthcoming Wall plan. Unfortunately, however, the JFK White House is unwilling to use this data as the basis for firm Berlin counter-measures. (Buckley is at his most grindingly ideological here, even reprinting a National Review editorial.) Thus, finally, Tod and his small underground group are forced to go it alone against the Wall construction--in a near-kamikaze tank operation. And though Tod survives this futile raid (the Wall goes up as planned, of course), he is doomed nonetheless--when the East Germans come up with a scheme to trap him into a reunion with his long-lost sister: she isn't dead, as it happens, but survived the war. . .

This is a novel about friendship, a novel that spans the decades that changed America forever. Orson is a young boy whose mother works at a U.S. Army base in Germany in the 1950s. There, he becomes a fan of a G.I. stationed at the base, one Elvis Presley, whose music is played over and over on the radio. When Orson is caught stealing recordings of Elvis's tunes from the PX, the attendant publicity catches the star's attention, and he comes to visit his young fan. Thus begins a lifelong friendship. As Elvis's career rockets ever higher and his behavior becomes ever more erratic, the two share many adventures. The sixties explode, and Elvis becomes the icon of the nation, while Orson, a college demonstrator, drifts away from regular life while looking for something of substance to believe in. Each man is an emblem of his time, as social conventions crumble, barriers fall, and the cultural landscape changes forever. A panorama of change and dissent, of the ability of friends to stay true despite distance and time, Elvis in the Morning portrays a nation in change and the effects of celebrity on innocence.

( If any two people can be called indispensable in launch...)
If any two people can be called indispensable in launching the conservative movement in American politics, they are William F. Buckley Jr. and Barry Goldwater. Buckley’s National Review was at the center of conservative political analysis from the mid-fifties onward. But the policy intellectuals knew that to actually change the way the country was run, they needed a presidential candidate, and the man they turned to was Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater. Goldwater was in many ways the perfect choice: self-reliant, unpretentious, unshakably honest and dashingly handsome, with a devoted following that grew throughout the fifties and early sixties. He possessed deep integrity and a sense of decency that made him a natural spokesman for conservative ideals. But his flaws were a product of his virtues. He wouldn’t bend his opinions to make himself more popular, he insisted on using his own inexperienced advisors to run his presidential campaign, and in the end he electrified a large portion of the electorate but lost the great majority. Flying High is Buckley’s partly fictional tribute to the man who was in many ways his alter ego in the conservative movement. It is the story of two men who looked as if they were on the losing side of political events, but were kept aloft by the conviction that in fact they were making history.

It is not every day the God and Blackford Oakes save the Queen and indeed, God seemed to be doing a good e4nough job all by himself until circumstances assumed sure dire proportions that the CIA abd Oakes were called in to lend a hand. It becan in 1951 when the USA was on the verge of creating the Hydrogen Bomb and the Russians were doing their best to find out how. And someone, somewhere was telling them. It was Blackford Oakes mission to find out who & where. As he follows the trail into evermore unlikely places, surprise after surprise unfolds to reveal one of the biggest surprises of all, his own life is in danger. What is no surprise is that in this novel, about a young man recruited into the CIA straight off the Yale campus. Buckly tells it with the high style that is his own. The famous wit, humor and the bite are here on almost every page, as are the intelligence & the obvious inside knowlege of Washington, London, the Court: of how someone is brought up into the "Company", the training, and the way he functions on the job. Result is a unique entertainment where the excitement stems as much from the Author's virtuosity as it does from the drama of the story itself. William F. Buckley, Jr. is the editior of the National Review, host of television's Firing Line and author of many books. Saving the Queen is his first Novel!

(William F. Buckley Jr. reflects on the event that marked ...)
William F. Buckley Jr. reflects on the event that marked the fall of Communism in Europe The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 was the turning point in the struggle against Communism in Eastern Europe. The culmination of popular uprisings in Hungary, Poland, and East Germany, the Wall's fall led inexorably to revolutions in Czechoslovakia and Romania, the reunification of Germany, and, ultimately, the disintegration of the Soviet Union itself. In this book, American conservative pioneer and National Review founder William F. Buckley Jr. explains how and why the Cold War ended as it did-and what lessons we can draw from the experience. Writing with his legendary wit and insight, he brings to life Communism's last gasp, showing how Reagan's hard-nosed foreign policy and Gorbachev's reforms undermined Warsaw Pact dictators, emboldened dissidents, and finally made the dream of freedom a reality in Eastern Europe. • Written by one of America's most erudite and influential political thinkers and writer. • Includes a new foreword by Henry Kissinger marking the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Berlin Wall • Hailed as "eloquent and immensely readable" (Baltimore Sun), this account "celebrates the tenacity of the human spirit and the will to achieve freedom" (Publishers Weekly). Sure to delight conservatives, annoy liberals, and enlighten everyone who reads it, The Fall of the Berlin Wall is William F. Buckley Jr. at his inimitable best.

More than twenty years ago William F. Buckley Jr. launched the dashing character of Blackford Oakes like a missile over the literary landscape. This newly minted CIA agent-brainy, bold, and complex-began his career by saving the queen of England and quickly took his place in the pantheon of master spies drawn up by Somerset Maugham, Graham Greene, and John le Carré. Against the backdrop of sinister Cold War intrigue, in this, his eleventh outing, Oakes crosses paths-and swords-with Kim Philby, perhaps the highest-ranking in the parade of defectors to the Soviet Union. Oakes is now himself a master spy, working outside of the agency and around agency rules. His romance with an able and worldly Soviet doctor provides consolation for the death of his beloved Sally. But after his return to Washington, he receives dismaying news. It is inevitable that the great Soviet spy and the renowned American agent will meet again-this time with deadly consequences.
