Engaged in tobacco trade with England and West Indies. Fur trader, land speculator. Owner plantation near what is now Richmond, Virginia imported, used, sold numerous slaves.

Commander Henrico County (Virginia) Militia. Member Virginia House of Burgesses, 1677-1682, member Virginia Council of State, 1683-1704, president, 1703-1704. Member Albany Convention to treat with Indians, 1685.

Auditor general Virginia, 1688.
