Graduated from College William and Mary, 1841. Studied law Harvard.

Career

Captain 11th United States Infantry in Mexico. Discharged with rank of major, 1848. Member Virginia House of Delegates, 1850-1853.

Colonel Confederate Army, 1861, brigadier general, 1862, led brigade under Jackson throughout Valley campaign. Defended Battery Wagner on Morris Island during assault on Charleston Harbor, South Carolina., July 18, 1863. Safeguarded garrison of Savannah in escaping from Sherman, 1864.

Major general, 1865; member Virginia Legislature, 1874-1879. Judge Gloucester County (Virginia) Court, 1891-1897. Member board visitors College William and Mary.
