Woods, William Burnham was born on August 3, 1824 in Newark, Ohio, United States. Son of Ezekiel S. and Sarah Judith (Burnham) Woods.

Education

Attended Western Reserve College. Graduated from Yale, 1845. Read law with S D. King, Newark, O.

Career

Admitted to bar, 1847. Partner in law firm (with S. D. King), 1847-1861. Mayor Newark, 1856; member (Democrat) Ohio General Assembly, 1857, 59.

Commissioned lieutenant colonel 76th Ohio Infantry, 1862, left in service as brevet major general, 1866. Settled in Alabama; chancellor Middle Chancery Division of Alabama, 1868. Judge 5th United States Circuit Court (appointed by President Grant), 1869-1880.

Justice Supreme Court of the United States Court, 1880-1887. Author: Wood’s Reports, 4 vols., 1875-1883.
