William Laurens Pressly was born on April 1, 1944 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States; the son of William Laurens and Alice McCallie Pressly.
William Laurens Pressly received a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in 1966. Eight years later he got a Doctor of Philosophy from New York University.
William worked as an assistant professor from 1973 to 1979 and as an associate professor at Yale University from 1979 to 1982. In the same year he became a senior lecturer at the University of Texas—Austin and worked there till 1983. In 1985 William Pressly was appointed as an associate professor of Duke University at the department of art and art history. He also served as director of graduate studies, chair of the department of art history and archaeology and professor of art history at the University of Maryland.
Currently, Pressly is a Professor Emeritus of eighteenth and nineteenth-century European Art at the University of Maryland. He is the author of such books as James Barry: The Life and Art of James Barry and James Barry: the Artist as Hero. In addition to numerous articles and essays, William has also authored A Catalogue of Paintings in the Folger Shakespeare Library, The French Revolution as Blasphemy: Johan Zoffany’s Paintings of the Massacre at Paris, August 10, 1792, and The Artist as Original Genius: Shakespeare’s ‘Fine Frenzy’ in Late-Eighteenth-Century British Art.

William Laurens Pressly married Nancy Lee Dorfman on July 12, 1970. They have one child - David Blake.
