Mason was born on October 12, 1853 in New York City, New York, United States; the son of James and Emma (Wheatley) Mason.
Mason received a Bachelor of Science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1877. Four years later he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Albany Medical College. Also William studied bacteriology at the Pasteur Institute in 1889 and 1893. In 1908, he was given a Doctor of Laws degree from Lafayette College.
Mason began his career as an assistant in chemistry and natural science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1875. Seven years later he was appointed an assistant professor and professor of analytical chemistry in 1885 at the same institute. Since 1893 William was a professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Also in 1895, he held a position of a head of the chemistry department at that institute. In 1912, Mason became a head of chemical engineering department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he worked until 1925.

2011Mason was the first academic president of the American Water Works Association, United States Assay Commission in 1896, a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science and an honorary member of several European societies of municipal and sanitary engineers.
In 1866, William Mason married Emilie E. Harding. They had a child. Then in 1908, he married Margaret D. Betts.
