ZoltāN Kodaly, Hungarian composer. Member American Academy Arts and Letters Hungarian Academy Science (president 1945-1948).

Background

Kodaly, ZoltāN was born on December 16, 1882 in Kecskemet, Hungary. Son of Frederic and Pauline (Jalovetzky) Kodaly.

Education

Doctor of Philosophy, University Budapest, 1906.

Career

Teacher high school music, 1907-1942. Composer orchestral works, chamber music, string trio and quartets, sonatas, cello solo, cello and piano duet. Orchestral and choral works include Nyńri est, 1906, Psalmus Hungaricus, 1923, Te Deum, 1936, Missa Brevis, 1944.

Stage works include Háry János Szekely fonó, 1926. Concerto for Orchestra, Variations on a Hungarian Folksong, Marosszćk Dances, 1929, Galánta Dances, 1933, many a capella choruses, including Zrinyi’s Hymn, 1955, Symphonie I Lucerne, 1961.
