When Emperor Godaigo encouraged learning among the people, Gen-e lectured on the Confucian doctrine of Chutze, which fashioned the Japanese sense of justice and moral obligations of the following generations. Later, trusted by Takauji Ashikaga, he participated in the formulation of the Kemmu Shikimoku, a moral code for warriors. Teikin Orai, the moral code for the masses for many generations, is believed to have been also written by him. Gen-e is supposed to have written even some morality plays. Those moral and intellectual contributions of Gen-e were made during extremely turbulent years in which the nation suffered from the feud between the South and North Imperial Dynasties.
