Gensei was born in 1623. His posthumous name is Nissei. Gensei was commonly called Kichibe-e Ishii.

Career
Before becoming a priest, Gensei served Naotaka Ii, lord of the Hikone Clan (Shiga Prefecture). Moved by Saint Nichiren's writings, Gensei gave up samurai-hood and became a disciple of Nippo, a priest of the Nichiren Sect. He was a waka poet as well as a tea-ceremony master. The legend that Gensei was Tsune-emon Ishii who was the lover of Takao, a noted courtesan of Yoshiwara, is groundless.
Gensei passed away in 1668. The place of his death is unknown.
