Gesshō was born in 1813 in Osaka. He was also known as Ninko. Gesshō was the son of physician Teisai Tamax.

In 1835, he entered the Kiyomizudera Temple in Kyoto and studied under Zokai, succeeding his master.
Gesshō cooperated with Prince Shoren-in and Tadahiro Konoe in Kyoto in the cause of restoring the Imperial regime. To avoid pursuit by the police of the Tokugawa Shogunate, he fled to Satsuma (Kagoshima Prefecture), in 1858.
He jumped into the sea with Takamori Saigō during their voyage to Hiuga (Miyazaki Prefecture) the same year. Saigo was rescued but Gesshōo drowned.
