Gien studied under Chiho, priest of the Gangoji Temple.
Becoming a priest on Imperial order. Later he founded the Ryumonji Temple where he resided. In 703. Gien became a bishop. He had many disciples, among whom were Gernbo, Gyōki, Ryoben, etc., who were called Shichi-J osoku, or Seven Superior Disciples. Dōjo and Dokyo were also his disciples.
