Gien was born in 1558 in the family of Haruyoshi Nijo.

In 1571, Gien became a priest. In 1579, he was made archbishop. He converted Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who often visited the Daigoji Temple to see sights around the temple which he loved. In 1598, the famous cherry-blossom viewing party of Hideyoshi was held in this temple. The Daigoji Temple was reconstructed with the financial help of Hideyoshi and his son, Hideyori. Gien is regarded as the restorer of the historic temple.
