Education
Gishin was a disciple of Saint Dengyo (Saicho). In 804, he followed his master to China as his interpreter, returning to Japan the following year.
Career
In 823, with Imperial sanction, Gishin performed the important ritual of Enton Daibosatsu Kai Komma at the Enryakuji Temple for the first time. By order of Emperor Saga, he wrote a commentary on the doctrine of the Tendai Sect.
In 827 Gishin established a Mahayana ordination center on Mount Hiei in fulfillment of Dengyō’s wishes.
In 832, the Court nominated him Chief Priest of the Enryakuji Temple.
In his late years, Gishin retired and lived quietly in the Shuzenji Temple, calling himself Shuzen-Osho.
