In 1662, Gizan entered priesthood under the influence of his devout mother. The following year, he went to the Zojōji Temple in Edo and attended Priest Don-yo. Afterwards, he studied under Bunsho, a priest in Shimotsuke Province (Tochigi Prefecture).
Career
In 1683, Gizan came back to Kyoto and preached to many followers and disciples. He revised and corrected errors in many Buddhist scriptures. In 1715, he preached in the presence of ex-Emperor Reigen. Shoshii-monin (Consort of Emperor Higashiyama) often received him in audience and considered herself as a disciple of Gizan.
