Nothing is known for certain about him except that he executed a picture book in 12 volumes depicting the life of St. Ippen, a great Buddhist priest, which is still preserved at the Kankikoji Temple in Kyoto. At the end of the book, En-i writes that it was executed in 1299. It is signed "Hogen En-i", Hogen being a high rank in Buddhist priesthood. The style of his painting differs from that of the Tosa School, it being the orthodox style of the traditional Buddhist painting. He must have been the unrivaled master Buddhist painter of his time.
