MILLAR, A. H. was born on November 25, 1847 in Glasgow. Youngest son of Andrew Millar, manufacturer, and Mary Browning.
Studied at Saint Peter’s School, Glasgow, and privately. Studied music at Andersonian University, Glasgow. Highest certificates in Theory and History of Music from John Hullah, and in Original Composition from Sir George A. Macfarren.
Doctor of Laws (Saint Andrews).
Was Assistant to Colin Brown, Professor of Music, Andersonian University, 1869. Began to write art-criticism for Art Journal under South. C. Hall, 1879, and still occasional contributor. Joined staff of Dundee Advertiser under Sir John Leng, January 1881, as leader-writer, art-critic, and reviewer, also writing historical serials for People's Journal and People's Friend.
Has contributed many papers to the proceedings of Society of Antiq. of Scotland.
Numerous contributions to Academy, Athenaeum, Art Journal, Blackwood’s Magazine, Bookman, British Weekly, Gentleman’s Magazine, Literature, Pall Mall Gazette. Scottish Review (quarterly).
Was on staff" of 1404 Dictionary of National Biography and written over 100 articles for lieutenant; 1909; Scot., 1882; Chief Librarian and Curator, Dundee Free Library and Museum, since 1908.
Literary Editor, 1889- 1908, music critic and art critic, 1886-190S, Dundee Advertiser. Editor of Valentine’s Shire Series of Illustrated County Histories.
