A. H. Savage Landor (1867-1925), the grandson of the author Walter Savage Landor (1775-1864), was born and educated in Florence. He abandoned his painting studies in Paris to travel around the world, and visited Asia, the Middle East and South America, supporting himself as he went by painting portraits of people he encountered. Landor became a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1892, and a Member of the Royal Institution in 1897. This volume, first published in 1893, deals with his adventurous experiences among the indigenous Ainu, the 'hairy men' who lived in the northern 'home islands' of Japan and in Sakhalin, the island whose possession was disputed by Japan and Russia for two hundred years. Landor insisted on 'doing in Ainuland as the Ainu does'. He describes his journey through the Ainu territory and gives a detailed and ethnographically aware account of its people and their culture.

(Born and educated in Florence, Arnold Henry Savage Landor...)
Born and educated in Florence, Arnold Henry Savage Landor (1867-1925) abandoned his art studies in Paris in favour of adventurous expeditions across Asia, Africa, the Middle East and South America. A fellow of the Royal Geographical Society from 1892, Landor was also made a member of the Royal Institution in 1897. Dismissive of specialist equipment, he embarked on extraordinary trips that often required considerable courage and endurance. Another of his publications, Alone with the Hairy Ainu (1893), is also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection. The present work, first published in 1895, is an absorbing account of the geography, people and culture of Korea. While Landor's grasp of the forces of change at work in the country may be partial, the work nevertheless demonstrates a valuable understanding of Korean culture and customs not found in earlier accounts. Many fine illustrations by Landor himself increase the book's appeal.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. The Chinese behaved gracefully in the transaction, and, to the astonishment of everybody, even removed an ancient pagoda which would have somewhat obstructed the view of the new Cathedral. On May 30, 1887, the foundation-stone was solemnly laid in the presence of several foreign Representatives and Chinese officials, and in December of the same year the old Pe-tang was delivered into the hands of the Tsung-liYamen. The new Cathedral was completed twelve months later, its consecration taking place on Sunday. December 9, 1888. All the foreign Ministers in Pekin were represented at the imposing ceremony. His Excellency Sun, Minister of the Yamen, sent by the Emperor, made his official entry into the Cathedral soon after the Te DcuIn had been sung. Lavish refreshments were supplied later in the day by the Catholics, who, it may be observed, know what is good and what is bad in the way of delicacies. Various friendly speeches were made by the Chinese, and responded to by the French, Heathens and Christians parted on friendly terms, and satisfied with their respective bargains. And now to consider the Cathedral itself, a most impressive structure of white marble, approached by a wide avenue leading out of the main road in the Imperial City. Resting solidly on a high terrace, with a massive white marble balustrade, the main entrance opened on three flights of steps guarded by two Chinese sea lions carved in marble and of considerable beauty. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII SIMPLICITY OF SPOKEN AND WRITTEN LANGUAGES IN THE ARCHIPELAGO THE CUYONO TONGUE TO avoid constant repetition and explanation, it may be as well to make a few general remarks on the various languages and dialects of the entire Philippine and Sulu archipelagoes, of which the Cuyono language forms an interesting branch. Remember that there are in these islands dozens of distinct languages, and hundreds of dialects, some of which differ so largely from the root language from which they are derived that they might be classified as languages apart. Cuyono, for instance, comes under this category, although it undoubtedly is a compound tongue, with strong affinities to Tagalo, Visayan, some Tagbanoua, and a touch here and there of corrupted Spanish. The reason I consider Cuyono an important language is because, in a way, in its subdivision of dialects, it is understood over the entire southwest portion of the Philippine archipelago, and, after the above-mentioned languages, is one which is largely spoken. Regardless of what the very studious but often erring speculating scientist at home may preach, it is quite safe to state that, with the exception of the Negrito language and some of the tongues spoken by the savage tribes of central Mindanao, and one or two tribes in Luzon, most of the languages spoken in the Philippines are of Malayan origin. To support this argument, it may be said that, not only many of the words in constant use resemble one another and very closely approximate to, when they are not identical with, a Malayan root, but even the original grammatical construction has to a considerable extent been preserved. Naturally, the difficulty of communication between islands, the many wars with the aboriginal tribes and...

CD-ROM Edition Excerpt: ...........A corridor runs along the whole train, and for a few kopeks passengers can at any moment procure excellent tea, caviare sandwiches, or other light refreshments from attendants. Now for the bedding itself. The Russian, who is ever a practical man, carries his own bedding--a couple of sheets, blankets, and small pillow,--a custom infinitely cleaner and more sensible than sleeping in dubious, smelly blankets of which one does not know who has used them before, nor when they were washed last. But if passengers wish, by paying a rouble (two shillings) a night to the guard, bedding is provided by the Railway. There is a fine lavabo at the end of each carriage, with shampoo, hot and cold water, etc. Here, too, by asking the guard, towels are handed over to those passengers who have not brought their own. Here I may relate another amusing incident. Unable to get at my towels packed in my registered baggage, and ignorant of the Russian language, I inquired of a polyglot fellow-passenger.............

(The nineteenth century can rightly claim to have seen the...)
The nineteenth century can rightly claim to have seen the birth and travels of a host of brave men and women who undertook great hardships in their quest for adventure. Legendary names come to mind like Sven Hedin, Sir Richard Burton and Isabella Bird. Yet sadly, one name is largely forgotten today, that is Henry Savage Landor. Though Savage Landor became justly famous for making a series of trips to many outlandish and dangerous places, none of his trips aroused public sentiment like his famed journey through Tibet in the late 1890s. Fearing her covetous foreign neighbors in British-occupied India and Imperial China, this high Himalayan country had sealed her borders to outsiders. Thereafter a number of Europeans, including several British explorers, had been detected by Tibetan officials and turned back before they could reach the nation’s isolated capital at Lhasa. With such a geographic prize at stake, Savage Landor determined to set off with a small group of native porters to reach the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, by stealth. To say he failed would be too polite a term for what occurred next. After making his way across vast and primitive lands, the would-be explorer was detected by the Tibetans and arrested. Once they determined that the Englishman was traveling without the official sponsorship of his government, the situation turned from bad to worse. Savage Landor and his servants were first imprisoned, then brutally tortured. At one point the explorer had his arms tied behind his back. He was then mounted on a half-wild horse, placed in an infamous “torture saddle” that had spikes sticking into his back, and forced to ride many miles, all the while being slowly torn to bits by the cruel spikes. Illustrated with hundreds of photographs and drawings, this blood-chilling account of equestrian adventure still makes for page-turning excitement.
