McGowan began his career with Morecambe and made his professional debut on 20 April 2013 in a 2–0 defeat against Torquay United, becoming the club's youngest ever debutant. McGowan came on as a substitute for Chris McCready on 1 January 2014 Vs York City Football Club after impressing manager Jim Bentley. In an interview Bentley see's McGowan as a prospect for the future of the club and the next big thing to come out of the lower leagues.
