At the age of 18, while still a high school student, he ran unsuccessfully for mayor against incumbent Bernard Hohman, "who was completing his second term."
In 2007, Montz was elected to the City Council to represent the city’s Second Ward. He chaired the Streets, Sidewalks, and Sewers Committee as well as the Recreation and Public Properties Committee. He also served on the Finance Committee.
While a council member, he and councilman Rich Cline made overtures to the county government about saving the long-neglected county courthouse in Tiffin from demolition.
However, the building was razed less than a month into his mayoral term. He has been on the Republican Central Committee and the city"s fair housing board.
Taking the mayor"s office at age 26, he is the youngest mayor in Tiffin"s history. Montz is a 2004 graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School and in 2008 received a Bachelor degree from Heidelberg University, where he studied History and Political Science.
