He started out playing as a youth player for Norwich City Academy. In 2001 he and his family moved to Canada, where his father Billy Steele would eventually become the assistant coach of Hamilton Thunder under head coach Duncan Wilde. In 2003 he was signed by Hamilton where he would help the team to 8 game undefeated streak, but when Wilde resigned after falling out of favor with owner Italo Ferrari, he also left Hamilton.
The following year Wilde was appointed the new head coach of the Toronto Lynx of the USL First Division where again he was signed by him.
With the Lynx he appeared 16 games but his team failed to reach the playoffs resulting Wilde to leave his position again as head coach. During the playoffs in the quarter finals he scored and the second goal in 3-1 victory over the Windsor Border Stars.
On July 14, 2006 Steele returned to play for Toronto and was again reunited with Wilde. He made his debut on July 14 in an Open Canada Cup game against the Serbian White Eagles.But Steele's season was cut short due to injuries, and he only appeared in five games.
But helped the Lynx to 10 game undefeated streak at home a franchise record, and helped the team reach the finals of the Open Canada Cup but lost 2-0 to Ottawa Saint Anthony Italia.
When the season ended the club owners decided to dropped the club two division down into the USL Premier Development League. He remained with the club, where he was appointed the new team captain after the retirement of Joe Mattacchione. But he missed the entire season when he blew out his knee in a scrimmage game the night before the Toronto Lynx press conference.
