Background

Young, Aaron was born on December 19, 1819 in Wiscasset, Maine, United States. Son of Aaron and Mary (Colburn) Young.

Education

Attended Bowdoin College, 1840-1841, Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, 1842-1843.

Career

Assistant to Professor Parker Cleaveland in natural history department Bowdoin College, 1840-1841. Secretary Bangor Natural History Society, 1840’s. State botanist Maine, 1847-1849, explored Mount Kathadin and Castine Bay, published report on 1st surveys of Mount Katahdin in Maine Farmer, March-May, 1848.

Practiced medicine specializing in ear surgery, Auburn, Lewiston and Portland (Maine). Founded, wrote and printed 3 small weekly newspapers, Farmer and Mechanic, Pansophist, Touchstone (all Farmington, Maine), 1852-1854. Published Franklin Journal of Aural Surgery and Rational Medicine, Farmington.

American counsul to Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, 1863-1873. Member Massachusetts Medical Society, circa 1875.
