Shikler enrolled in the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. However, in 1943 he was drafted into the Army Air Corps. After the war, he returned to Tyler receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Science in Education in 1947 and Master of Fine Arts the next year.

Aaron Shikler became an associate of the National Academy of Design in 1962, and an academician of the National Academy of Design in 1965.
Shikler was elected a centennial fellow of Temple University in 1985.

Barbara was diagnosed with lung cancer and died in 1998. Shikler continued to paint in his studio at home until he died of kidney failure on November 12, 2015, surrounded by his friends and family.
