Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is an Egyptian politician, known as the current President of Egypt. He also served as Director of Military Intelligence and Minister of Defence.
Background
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was born on November 19, 1954 in Cairo, Egypt. He is a son of Said Hussein Khalili al-Sisi and Soad Mohamed. His father had a wooden antiques shop for tourists in the historic bazaar of Khan el-Khalili. The el-Sisi family originated from Monufia Governorate.
Abdel has seven siblings.
Education
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and his siblings studied at the nearby library at Al-Azhar University. Later he studied at the Egyptian Military Academy and graduated from it in 1977. In 1987, he attended the Egyptian Command and Staff College. In 1992, Abdel obtained a master's degree from the Joint Services Command and Staff College. Later el-Sisi attended war course at Nasser Military Academy in 2003 and at the United States Army War College in 2006.
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi started his career as a military officer in the infantry corps in 1977. He held various leading posts in the army including those of commander of Egypt's Mechanized Infantry Battalion and head of information security at the General Secretariat of the Defence Ministry. He also served as the Egyptian military attaché in Saudi Arabia, following Tantawi's career path: Tantawi served as a military attaché in Pakistan for several years. In 2008, el-Sisi became commander of the Northern Military Region-Alexandria. In 2010, he was appointed Director of Military Intelligence and Reconnaissance and held this post until 2012.
In 2012, then President of Egypt Mohamed Morsy appointed el-Sisi as Minister of Defense and Military Production in the Qandil Cabinet and commander-in-chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces. During Egyptian protests in 2013 el-Sisi issued an ultimatum to Morsi to resolve the crisis within 48 hours or face military intervention. Morsi refused to step down and the army had to overthrow him in a coup d'état. On July 16, 2013, el-Sisi became Deputy Prime Minister of Egypt and, on January 27, 2014, he was promoted to the rank of field marshal. In March of that year, he announced that he would resign from the military to run for president later that year. El-Sisi became president on June 8, 2014.
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi won a second term of office in March 2018 at the election. On February 10, 2019, he became Chairperson of the African Union and held this post until 2020.
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is a muslim. He comes from a religious family and frequently quotes Quranic verses during informal conversations. When he became president he has called for the reform and modernization of Islam. He has taken measures within Egypt such as regulating mosque sermons and changing school textbooks. El-Sisi tried to call for an end to the Islamic verbal divorce, but this was rejected by a council of scholars. El-Sisi also became the first Egyptian president in the country's history to attend Christmas Mass.
Politics
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi started his political career in 2013, when the protest against Mohamed Morsi began. He organized a coup d'etat and on July 24, 2013 el-Sisi called for mass demonstrations to grant the Egyptian military and police a "mandate" to crack down on terrorism. The army worked to bring law and order back to the streets as Morsi's organization turned violent and staged an endless number of terrorist attacks. However this resulted in rapidly escalating violence that eventually led to deaths of 638 people.
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi resigned as Minister of Defense and declared his bid to run for president. He was an independent politician and competed against Egypt's most prominent leftist politician, Hamdeen Sabahi. El-Sisi launched his election campaign under the slogan "Long Live Egypt," outlining an ambitious plan to develop agriculture, housing, education and impoverished areas. He also said that Egyptians would see a better standard of living within two years of him being in power. He claimed that his victory would mean the Muslim Brotherhood's time would be "finished." El-Sisi won the elections and became president in 2014.
El-Sisi encouraged Egyptians to help rebuild the Egyptian economy and said that he would make an example by donating half his salary and half his personal assets to support the Egyptian economy. He also raised taxes on alcohol and cigarettes. By March 2015 after 8 months of Sisi's rule, Egypt's external debt fell to 39.9 billion dollars. In 2016, Sisi's administration launched a package of aggressive economic reforms with the aim of rescuing the economy from total collapse. The reforms included the liberalization of the exchange rate of the Egyptian pound, the elimination of most fuel, electricity and water subsidies and introducing new taxes. However, the reforms also came at the cost of the living standards of the majority of the public because of the rise they caused in the prices of almost all commodities.
When Abdel Fattah el-Sisi came to power in mid-2014, Egypt's relations with most of the world had never been worse. He had to take hundreds of visits across the globe to clarify the facts about political developments in Egypt. Things started getting better. Egypt retained its relations with most of the world. It also returned to the African fold. However, el-Sisi's heavy-handed crackdown on political Islam has had its toll on political freedoms in Egypt in general. In late 2019, political criticism, directly calling for el-Sisi to resign immediately or in 2022, were made.

Quotes from others about the person
Negad Borai: "There is no way a military commander like el-Sisi who has no political background should be expected to believe in democracy as we see it in the West. El-Sisi, rightly or wrongly, is a reflection of the mood on the street, which has discovered that the cost of democracy is way too high."
Donald Trump: "He took control of Egypt. And he really took control of it."
