Educated at Tripoli, he entered the Military College at the age of 19 and Was commissioned with Qadafi in August 1965.
Promoted to captain a month before the Revolution, he was one of the main Planners of the coup which ousted the regime of King Idris on September 1, 1969. He did much of the planning for the new republic in its first few months and was a leading figure in the negotiations for the evacuation of the British American forces from their bases by March 1970.
He was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and lineal Government in September 1970 and control over all matters of security of the intelligence. A year later the Local government portfolio was withdrawn. Early in 1971 he vanished abroad and nothing was announced about the post of Deputy Prime Minister being vacant until August 1971 when it was eliminated from the list.
He reappeared seemingly as powerful ever in the role of Minister of Interiorr. On November 2, 1972, he was placed as Minister of Interior without any explanation.
Powerful figure in the inner circle of the government, a former Deputy Prime Minister still very influential. His mysterious long absence abroad in 1971 and his sudden departure from the Ministry of Interior in 1972 are indications that he is a controversial character prepared to speak his mind.
