Abe Masayuki

Masayuki was a retainer of the Tokugawa Dynasty who was responsible for the construction of the Nikko Shrine and the first waterworks of Yedo. He served Hidetada and Iemitsu, second and third Shogun of the Tokugawa Dynasty, respectively. He distinguished himself in the decisive Summer Battle of Osaka (1615) between the Tokugawa and Toyotomi Clans.
Career
After the Tokugawa Shogunate regime was established, he devoted himself to riparian and other public works. He is particularly known for the excavation of the Kanda Canal which brought water to the capital from the Tama River, the vestiges of which still remain today. The gorgeous edifices of the Nikko Shrine were constructed also under his direction.
