He made a great fortune by exporting raw silk soon after the Meiji Restoration. With other public minded men he organized the Kaiseisha Association in 1873. It turned a large plot of barren land in his native prefecture into a prosperous farming village of Kuwano. He also actively assisted in the Lake Inawashiro drainage project, education and transportation affairs in his native district.
