Resigned membership in Quaker Society after being disowned because of her anti-slavery views. Worked to improve conditions of poor, blind, crippled children in city poor-house in New York City.
Nurse and helper in camps and hospitals in Civil War, 1861-1865. During draft riots of 1863 her home greatly destroyed by rioters.
Helped start Labor and Aid Society (to assist returning soldiers in finding employment and new opportunity).
