Elected xo Provincial Parliament of New Brunswick, 1854, and each subsequent election till 1867, when he resigned seat and office of Chief of Public Works in the Government to enter the Dominion Senate. Appointed Lieutenant-Governor 1896. Always a Liberal in politics, favouring free trade and a closer union with Great Britain and the Empire.
