Silberschatz was born on May 1, 1947 in Haifa, Israel; the son of Joseph and Vera (Rosenblum) Silberschatz. He arrived in the United States in 1968 and naturalized as an American citizen.
Silberschatz received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Computer Science from State University of New York in 1976.
Silberschatz began his career as an endowed chair in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas in 1976. Seventeen years later he was appointed a vice president of the Information Sciences Research Center at Bell Laboratories. Since 2005, Abraham has been the Sidney J. Weinberg Professor of Computer Science at Yale University. Also he served as a chairman of the Computer Science department at the same university from 2005 to 2011.
In addition, Silberschatz is currently involved in a number of research projects dealing with database systems, networking and privacy. He has written editorials dealing technology and policy issues, which have appeared in publications including The New York Times, Boston Globe, Hartford Courant and Industry Standard.
