(Leopold is delighted to publish this classic book as part...)
Leopold is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. This means that we have checked every single page in every title, making it highly unlikely that any material imperfections – such as poor picture quality, blurred or missing text - remain. When our staff observed such imperfections in the original work, these have either been repaired, or the title has been excluded from the Leopold Classic Library catalogue. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, within the book we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(I he present Grammar is a work of no pretensions; it is o...)
I he present Grammar is a work of no pretensions; it is offered as a small contribution toward advancing the A vesta cause. It is written in part fulfilment of a design formed when I first began to study the A vesta and became deeply interested in the true value and importance of that monument of antiquity. The end for which the book is intended would perhaps have been better accomplished, however, if the work had been a mere grammatical sketch. This was my first design; and it may at another time be carried out. But as the work grew under my hands, it seemed desirable to enlarge it somewhat further, and to embody additional material which for reference might be serviceable to the general philologist, not to the specialist alone. The linguist may thus find in it useful matter and fresh illustrations, especially in the new readings from Geldner sedition of the A vesta texts. No attempt, on the other hand, has been made to secure absolute completeness. Numerous minor points have been purposely omitted. These may perhaps later be taken up in a more extended work including also the Old Persian by the side of the A vesta and theS (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) Many persons, in fact, know of Kermanshah only through the rugs for which the city and its vicinity once were famous, even if the rug manufacture is almost a lost industry now in Kermanshah itself and the carpets which are exported through its customs to-day come mostly from other parts of Persia and are merely shipped by way of this distributing-centre. 1 Commercially the city of Kermanshah is favorably situated, as it lies on the main caravan route between Persia and Mesopotamia, being nearly equidistant from Teheran and Baghdad, two hundred and twenty miles from the latter and two hundred and fifty miles from the former. The town enjoys the advantages of a busy trade, especially on commission, and its population is now reported at fully sixty thousand, the inhabitants being largely of Kurdish blood, besides Persians, Turks, some Jews, and a few Christians.2 The municipal administration is in the hands of three magistrates (kadkhuda), each of whom presides over one of the three wards into which the city is divided, and is accountable, through a number of higher officials, to the Governor of Kermanshah appointed by the Shah. In area the extent of the town is considerable, as it measures about four...

(Excerpt from From Constantinople to the Home of Omar Khay...)
Excerpt from From Constantinople to the Home of Omar Khayyam: Travels in Transcaucasia and Northern Persia for Historic and Literary Research The kind reception given to my previous volume, Persia Past and Present has encouraged me to describe the first half of two subsequent journeys made through Northern Iran, Transcaspia, and Turkistan in 1907 and 1908 for the purpose of scholarly research. The portion included in the present book gives an account of the route from Constantinople, along the shores of the Black Sea and the Caspian, across Northern Persia, and into Russian Asia. The second section, which is planned to appear later, will cover the territory traversed beyond the Caspian into the Heart of Asia. Among the generous criticisms of the book that appeared five years ago was a special comment by George Edward Woodberry in approval of the 'blending of scholarship and travel - the research side imparting a touch of romance, and dignifying the travel.' I hope that the present pages may not be found to fall too far below the standard which the critic demanded to have maintained. For that reason I have refrained, as before, from an earlier idea of labeling certain chapters as 'dedicated to the special student,' because of their more technical contents, and of designating others as 'dedicated to the general reader.' It will not be found difficult, I think, to distinguish the appeal in either case. The nature of the regions visited is, necessarily, a factor in determining the character of the descriptive part of the work. If there be less of the element of hardship in travel in the present book, there is more of vision in regard to the history of civilization, the development of literature, and the sphere of man's influence. (From the Preface: THIS little book lays no claim to any...)
From the Preface: THIS little book lays no claim to any special merit beyond furnishing in convenient form some material for those beginning to study the Avesta. As it is intended merely for an introduction, and being designed as the first of a series of reading books, the number of pages of texts has been limited. The selections here given are such as may easily be mastered by a class in one college term; the beginner, moreover, always finds a certain degree of pleasure and satisfaction in a book that can be read through in a comparatively short time, and he feels he is making a certain amount of progress when another book has to be taken up. With that in view, a second volume is being prepared; this will contain longer texts and will be so arranged as to imply a step in advance. The present selections in prose and verse, are fairly representative, as far as excerpts can be, of Yasna, Visparad, Yasht, and Vendidad. The chapters Ys. 26 and 57 are given complete. The passage from Vd. 19 has the advantage of presenting a specimen of texts in which grammatical decay is to be observed. The notes in general have been made brief and concise, but it is hoped that beside being explanatory they will also prove useful in giving the student an occasional hint regarding books of reference, and will thus interest him in the literature of the subject. A brief list of useful books has already been given in Avesta Grammar Part i, p. xl-xlii. Attention is now also called to the new Avesta translation by Darmesteter, Le Zend-Avesta (3 volumes, Paris 1892-3), the last two volumes of which reached me after the greater part of the present book was already in press; I was pleased, however, to note several co-incidences in interpretation of certain Yasht and Vendidad passages. The vocabulary has been made a little more full perhaps than is necessary; but this was done from a desire to give the beginner a fair start. It seemed advisable, for example, to add frequent grammatical references, and to designate the verb forms in full. A slightly different plan will be followed in the Second Series. With regard to the etymologies in the vocabulary, comparison has been confined to Sanskrit, Old Persian, Pahlavi, and New Persian. It is presupposed, of course, that the student has made some progress in Sanskrit. The comparisons with Old Persian, Pahlavi and New Persian are added, not at all with the idea that they will be mastered by a beginner, but in order to show the pupil the importance of the Iranian as well as the Sanskrit side of interpretation, and to familiarize him with the studies next akin to his subject. Old Persian is easily mastered after Avestan, and the earnest student will soon discover that the well-equipped scholar cannot of course long dispense with Pahlavi and New Persian. The 'traditional' and 'comparative' method must go hand in hand. In preparing the book I have had before me W. Geiger's Handbuch der Awestasprache, the manual with which I first began my Avesta studies. Of course C. de Harlez Manuel de l’Avesta, and Bartholomae's Altiranische Dialekte have been often consulted. Justi's Handbuch der Zendsprache was necessarily used at every step; and Lanman's admirable Sanskrit Reader furnished many a hint or apt English rendering for kindred Avesta-Sanskrit words. The material for comparison with Old Persian was drawn from Spiegel's Altpersische Keilinschriften; and that for comparison with Pahlavi words, mainly from West's Glossary and Index of Arda Viraf. In the case of New Persian, reference was made to Vullers' Lexicon Persico-Latinum and to Palmer's Persian-English Dictionary. Paul Horn's new Grundriss der Neupersischen Etymologie (Strassburg 1893) came late but happily as I was reading the final revision of the proof-sheets of the vocabulary....

(Excerpt from Zoroaster, the Prophet of Ancient Iran This...)
Excerpt from Zoroaster, the Prophet of Ancient Iran This work deals with the life and legend of Zoroaster, the Prophet of Ancient Iran, the representative and type of the laws of the Medes and Persians, the Master whose teaching the Parsis to-day still faithfully follow. It is a biographical study based on tradition; tradition is a phase of history, and it is the purpose of the volume to present the picture of Zoroaster as far as possible in its historic light. The suggestion which first inspired me to deal with this special theme came from my friend and teacher, Professor Geldner of Berlin, at the time when I was a student under him, ten years ago, at the University of Halle in Germany, and when he was lecturing for the term upon the life and teachings of Zoroaster. It was from him that I received my earliest vivid impression of the historic reality of the Ancient Sage. The special material for the work, however, has grown out of my own lectures, delivered several times in the regular university curriculum of Columbia. Students who may have attended the course will perhaps recognize some of the ideas as discussed with them in the class. As I have had the preparation of this volume in view for some time, I have naturally been constantly adding to my material or collecting new facts to throw light on the subject. It is the aim of the book to bring together all that is generally known at the present time, either from history or from tradition, about this religious teacher of the East. Our knowledge of Zoroaster has been greatly augmented from the traditional side, during the past few years, especially through the translations made by Dr. West from the Pahlavi texts.
