The present volume is a collection of Professor Bromke's writings covering the events in Poland from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. It is a continuous story dealing with the major events, internal as well as external, from the collapse of the Gomulka regime, through the ups and downs of the Gierek government, to the Polish worker's upheaval in 1980. The book, thus, is a chronicle of the dramatic political developments in Poland over the last decade. It is written by an outside observer, but a close one of the Polish scene. Dr Bromke visited Poland sixteen times during the period under examination. He has travelled extensively throughout the countrey and he has met many of the "dramatis personnae", both on the side of the government and in the oposition.
