Kennedy was educated at the DePauw University. He studied acting under Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre.
Kennedy had a varied career working as an actor in Europe and on Broadway, as an abstract painter, and as the author of novels. In addition, he worked for a time at Chicago’s Grant Advertising as an account executive and as an art director and illustrator for Esquire and Coronet magazines.
Among his novels are The Domino Principle, Just like Humphrey Bogart, In a Far Country, No Place to Cry and The Fires of Summer. He also issued novels under the pseudonym John Redgate, including The Killing Season, Barlow’s Kingdom, and The Last Decathlon. Among his other books are Maggie D.: A Sexual History and Love Song. His interest in film also led him to write screenplays such as The Dove and Raise the Titanic, as well as The Domino Principle, which he adapted from his earlier novel. In addition to his film work, he appeared on television in more than three hundred productions, including shows such as Gunsmoke, The Californians and The Doctors.
As an artist, Kennedy painted oils and watercolors.
