He graduated from the University of Central Lancashire with a degree in Journalism. Whilst studying for A-levels he founded a student television station at Winstanley College. He attended Saint Bede"s Catholic High School in Ormskirk.

He also contributes to Independent Television News national output. McClean began his career in journalism working for the British Broadcasting Corporation prior to and throughout university. He joined the Independent Television Granada regional news team after completing his degree in 2010.
He first worked on the Independent Television national news, which is produced by ITN, in 2011.
He reports for North West regional news programme Granada Reports and the regional political programme Party People.
