Adam Sandler is an American actor and comedian, known for his portrayal of infantile but endearing characters. Along with his feature films that combined together have grossed over $2 billion at the box office, he has also released five comedy albums in his career, two of which were certified double-platinum.
Background
Ethnicity:
Adam Sandler said in a Russian interview that his parents’ families were both Russian Jewish. He also has Lithuanian Jewish ancestry.
Adam Richard Sandler was born on September 9, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York, the United States, to Judy and Stanley Sandler. His mother was a nursery school teacher while his father worked as an electrical engineer. He is the youngest of the couple’s four children. Adam grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire, after moving there at the age of six.
Education
Adam Sandler attended Manchester Central High School where he earned the reputation of being the class clown. His brother spotted his talent and encouraged him to perform at a stand-up comedy club in Boston. Motivated to pursue a career in show business, the young man took classes at the Lee Strasberg Theater & Film Institute in New York City after high school. He proceeded to attend the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, graduating in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in acting.
Adam Sandler was always the class clown but didn't consider becoming a comedian until his brother encouraged him to perform at a Boston Comedy Club at age 17. He found he was a natural comic. He nurtured his talent by performing regularly in clubs and at universities. During his freshman year, he snagged a recurring role as the Huxtable family's friend Smitty on The Cosby Show. He also became a regular on the MTV game show Remote Control. While working at a comedy club in Los Angeles, he was "discovered" by Dennis Miller, who recommended him to Saturday Night Live (1975) producer Lorne Michaels and told him that Sandler had a big talent. Sandler was hired as a writer for the sketch comedy show in 1990 and made occasional appearances before becoming a cast member the next year. During his five-year tenure with SNL, Sandler created a range of oddball characters, among them Operaman, an opera star who performed satiric songs in a mock basso profundo.
Even though Adam Sandler had started appearing in films during the late 1980s, it was only during the 1990s that he started receiving recognition for his movies. Sandler broke into film with small parts in such comedies as Shakes the Clown (1991); Coneheads (1993), which was based on an SNL sketch; and Mixed Nuts (1994). He established himself as a star with Billy Madison (1995), the first of a number of movies he co-wrote; in it, he played the oafish scion of a wealthy businessman who must prove his worthiness to succeed his father by repeating his schooling. Sandler’s humor, while derided by some critics as puerile, proved popular with moviegoers. A succession of films in which he played similarly inept and foul-mouthed characters solidified his reputation as a reliable box-office draw.
Adam Sandler successful string of films continued into the late 1990s and he received much acclaim for his role as an unsuccessful ice hockey player who discovers a talent for golf in the comedy film Happy Gilmore in 1996. In The Waterboy (1998) he played the emotionally stunted water boy of a college football team who becomes its unlikely savior. In The Wedding Singer (1998), a romantic comedy with Drew Barrymore, and Big Daddy (1999), in which his character adopts a child to impress his girlfriend, Sandler demonstrated an ability to temper his outrageous antics with sentiment.
In 1999 Sandler formed his own production company, Happy Madison Productions, which produced his own films as well as vehicles for friends, including David Spade and Rob Schneider. In 2002 Sandler co-starred with Winona Ryder in Mr. Deeds and the critically acclaimed Punch-Drunk Love opposite Emily Watson. The following year he starred opposite Jack Nicholson in the hit comedy Anger Management. Taking a more dramatic turn, he starred in Spanglish (2004) as a husband experiencing trouble with his wife (played by Tea Leoni) and developing a relationship with his housekeeper (played by Paz Vega). The latter performances won him critical accolades. He reunited with Barrymore in the romantic farce 50 First Dates (2004).
Sandler continued to vary his work from broad comedies to more weighty material. Remaking the 1974 sports comedy The Longest Yard (2005), he played a convict who organizes a football game between the inmates and the guards - a role originated by Burt Reynolds. Reynolds also appeared in the remake along with comedian Chris Rock and singer Nelly. The next year, Sandler played an architect who discovers a remote control that gives the power to fast-forward or rewind his own life in Click (2006). He then took on the role of a man who loses his family in the September 11 terrorist attacks in Reign Over Me (2007). Through an accidental meeting with an old friend (played by Don Cheadle), Sandler's character begins to rebuild his shattered life. Sandler earned some positive reviews for his performance, with Variety calling him "compelling" and "excellent."
Returning to the over-the-top comedy he is most famous for, Sandler produced and starred in I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007). He played a straight firefighter who pretends to be in a gay relationship with a widowed firefighter (played by Kevin James) so that his friend can receive domestic partner benefits for himself and his children.
For his next venture, Sandler played an Israeli commando who fakes his own death to move to America to pursue his dream of becoming a hairdresser in You Don't Mess With the Zohan (2008). He also produced and co-wrote the film. Continuing to work behind the scenes, Sandler served as a producer The House Bunny (2008), the sorority house comedy starring Anna Faris.
In his next release, Bedtime Stories (2008), Sandler played a man who tells his niece and nephew bedtime stories, which suddenly begin to come true. The film also features Keri Russell as his love interest, and the remaining cast includes Teresa Palmer, Guy Pearce, Lucy Lawless, and Russell Brand. Sandler also starred in the 2009 summer comedy, Funny People, which was directed by Judd Apatow.
Sandler enjoyed great success with the 2010 comedy Grown Ups, co-starring Salma Hayek, Kevin James, and Chris Rock. He wrote the script for the movie as well. Seemingly bullet-proof at the box office, he raked in more than $26 million for the first weekend of Jack and Jill (2011) - a remarkable feat for a movie widely maligned by critics. In 2011, he shared the screen space with Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Nick Swardson, and Brooklyn Decker in the romantic comedy Just Go with It. The movie was panned by the critics but was very well received by the fans. It was a big commercial hit, grossing over $214 million. Sandler then lent his voice to the animated Hotel Transylvania in 2012 and starred in Grown Ups 2 in 2013. In 2015 he continued his voice work in Pixels and Hotel Transylvania 2 and closed out the year with the Western spoof The Ridiculous 6. In 2014, he once again proved his mettle in comedy with the role of Jim Friedman in the movie Blended. He portrayed the character of a widower with three young daughters who falls in love with a divorcee with two sons. The film was a box office success even though it received negative reviews from critics.
In 2016 he teamed up with David Spade in the Netflix comedy The Do-Over. Sandler then made a noted return to drama with a co-starring role in The Meyerowitz Stories (2017), playing a son of a sculptor (Dustin Hoffman) preparing for an exhibition showing his work, before reprising his voiceover role for Hotel Transylvania 3 (2018). The comedian made a celebrated return to stand-up in 2018 with the Netflix special 100% Fresh, which showcases his trademark juvenile songs along with more mature bits about life as a middle-aged father. That year Sandler rejoined Jennifer Aniston, his co-star from the 2011 romantic comedy Just Go With It, to begin filming Murder Mystery, slated for a June 2019 release on Netflix. On May 4, 2019, Sandler made his first appearance as host of SNL, ending the episode with a tribute to his friend and fellow former cast member Chris Farley.
In addition to his acting, Sandler has made several comedy albums. His first was the Grammy-nominated They're All Gonna Laugh At You (1993), which became an instant hit and expanded his fan base among young people through offensive songs and sketches. He followed with the albums What the Hell Happened to Me? (1996), What's Your Name? (1997), Stan and Judy's Kid (1999), and Shhh ... Don't Tell (2004).
Sandler is Jewish. He sometimes incorporates this into his work, such as his well-known song, The Chanukah Song. Adam’s wife converted to Judaism before marrying him.
Politics
Adam Sandler is a registered Republican. In 2007, Sandler donated $2,100 to Republican Rudy Giuliani’s failed presidential campaign and he performed at the 2004 Republican National Convention.
Views
Sandler contributed to a long list of charities, some of which involving Israel. In 2006, he donated 400 PlayStation game consoles to Israeli kids whose houses were hit by Hamas rockets. In 2007, Sandler made a $1 million donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in his hometown, Manchester, New Hampshire. He’s also lent his talents to fundraising events for autism awareness and Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
