Adam Schwarz attended Syracuse University, Florence, Italy, which he finished in 1982. In 1983 he obtained Bachelor of Arts (magna cum laude) from Duke University. In 1987 he graduated from Columbia University with Master of Business Administration degree.
From 1983 to 1985 Mr. Schwarz worked as an analyst in investment banking division at Banco Roberts, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Between 1985 and 1987 he occupied the position of managing editor at Columbia Journal of World Business, New York City. In 1986 Mr. Schwarz worked in corporate finance department at Shearson Lehman Brothers. Then he joined the staff of Jakarta Post, Jakarta, Indonesia, serving as a journalist and Luce scholar in the years 1987-1988.
During 1988-1989 Adam Schwarz was a freelance journalist in Jakarta. He acted as a correspondent from Jakarta for Far Eastern Economic Review from 1989 till 1992, assistant editor in Hong Kong, 1993-1994, correspondent from Bangkok, Thailand, 1994, bureau chief in Hanoi, Vietnam, 1995-1996. In 1992-1993 he was a visiting fellow at Asia Research Centre at Murdoch University.
