He completed the medical course at the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia in 1793 and continued studies in Europe, where he attended schools in Edinburgh, Göttingen, and Paris.
Became member American Philosophical Society, 1797, secretary, 1799-1808, counselor, 1810-1811. Earliest American expert in mineral analysis. Ran drug and apothecary shop, Philadelphia, early 1800’s, also laboratory for manufacturing chemicals (manufactured 1st mercurials in American).
Member United States House of Representatives (Democrat) from Pennsylvania, 11th-13th, 15th congresses, 1809-1815, 17-19. Member American Medical Society, Chemical Society of Philadelphia, Royal Scientific Society of Gottingen.
