Born in Pakistan in 1968, he graduated from the London School of Economics with a Bachelor of Science (Economy) International Relations, and then completed an Master of Arts in Latin American Politics at the Institute of Latin American Studies, University of London.
He began work at the British Broadcasting Corporation in the early 90s, as a broadcast assistant in the Latin American section of the British Broadcasting Corporation World Service. A Sony Award winning producer with British Broadcasting Corporation Radio 5 Live, where he spent five years producing live programmes and making documentaries for Radio 5 and Radio 4, he moved in 2000 to television Sportsnews, presenting the sport on the British Broadcasting Corporation News Channel and British Broadcasting Corporation World News. Since 2009, he has been reading the news on the British Broadcasting Corporation News channel and British Broadcasting Corporation World News
Nawaz is well travelled, having lived in the Philippines, Italy, the United States, France, Chile and the United Kingdom. He speaks five languages.
He has a tendency to wear brightly coloured socks on screen.
